"Whatever the Challenge...Don't Quit!" has a universal connection with a timeless force of encouragement and hope to all humanity throughout this world. We are faced with daily challenges which can interrupt a peaceful life that causes us to deal with untimely situations. "Don't Quit" serves as a constant reminder that, with a determined mind, we can overcome any obstacle and conqueror all situation we face.
On December 9, 1996, I was in a near-fatal automobile accident. I was a passenger traveling me back from the McDonalds located across the street from Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As we began to cross over the Duquesne Bridge, the van hit ice, spinning the vehicle out of control. We crossed the median strip and hit a driver in the oncoming traffic killing him instantly.
Because I was unrestrained in the front passenger's seat the force of the oncoming car, which hit the passengers door, caused me to fly into the driver’s side of the van. I hit my head, while my legs were stuck under the glove compartment. I was life-flighted by “Stat MediVac” to the Trauma unit and was admitted to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. (UPMC). C-spine films revealed a C2 pedicle fracture otherwise known as Hangman’s fracture Halo Vest application was applied. In addition the film also revealed a significant Anterior Lithiasis C2 to C3 approximately 8mm. X-rays of the Lumbar Spine were taken revealing left L1 and L2, Left transverse process fracture as well as left sacral LF fracture. In addition x-ray scanning of the left upper extremity did reveal a left Ulnar Styloid fracture, as well as a fracture at the base of the 5th metacarpal, and multiple lacerations on my legs and body.
After several days I was transferred to the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute in Squirrel Hill, where I remained for almost three months. Because I could not take care of my three beautiful children my world just STOPPED! However, through vigorous therapy, I learned how to walk, use the bathroom, dress and feed myself and even though I had some memory loss I progressed daily knowing ”That My Right Now Was Not My Forever”.
This Life Threatening Challenge I experienced FORCED ME to fight with all my mind, body and soul and with sheer determination through GOD...WHO IS RICH IN MERCY, I today am HEALED. I encourage everyone to remember that often times Bad things happen to Good people but keeping a positive attitude and only "Speaking Life" will secure your "Victory" “Whatever The Challenge….Don’t Quit!
